I created this logo for a fictional company called stackfarm, which I created for a business idea competition back in high school. stackfarm is an Agtech startup which creates home-size vertical farms, designed for consumers that want to grow smart, efficient, and sustainable produce in their homes. stackfarm's flagship product is also called the stackfarm, which is a cube-shaped vertical farm that utilizes aquaponic technology and LED lights unlike tradtional "horizontal" farming practices.
As I may have shown in some of my other designs in previous projects, I prefer simplicity and a minimalistic aesthetic, and logos were no exception. After watching some logo design technique lessons by Nigel French, I decided that I wanted to adopt a "creative" approach to my logo, in which the logo would be largely text-based, combined with one unique graphic feature. So, I decided that I wanted to just write out stackfarm in lowercase with a clean and easy-to-read font like Times, and a cube as my unique graphic feature, symbolizing the iconic cube-shaped stackfarm.
I started by writing "stackfarm" in text, then removed the "a" in stackfarm and created some space. I thought that adding a cube in both the "stack" "a" and the "farm" "a" would kind of ruin the magic of the cube, so I opted for just one. I contemplated just inserting a cube shape, but decided against it. I used the pen tool to draw two squares, then connected each corner manually, and with enough fiddling around, created a cube shape with an "open" top. I then adjusted the cube so that it would be in position of where the "a" would be. The "open" top of the cube demonstrates the "stack" feature of stackfarms, as one of their secondary selling points are their ability to be stacked on top of one another. Thus, the openness symbolizes the possibilities of more stackfarms to be added.
The black/white versions were made to satisfy the requirements of this project, but I am pleasantly surprised to say that the stackfarm logos actually look quite nice even just in B/W. The personalized light blue/green color scheme was more in line to the aquaponic/agriculture themes of the product. The blue of the text symbolizes how stackfarms utilize the sustainable method of aquaponics, and the green cube symbolizes the eco-friendly plants created in the stackfarm. Furthermore, I wanted to show the water "flowing" through the stackfarm.
I didn't derive any inspiration specifically from anywhere; this idea largely popped up into my head as I was sketchbooking some ideas in my notebook. My biggest reference was definitely from the Nigel French videos I watched. Most of all however, this project was a fun visualiziation of an idea I had in my head for a while.
